High blood pressure, or hypertension, is one of the most common health concerns worldwide—often going unnoticed but quietly increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and kidney issues. An epsom salt bath has long been a favorite for relaxation, but new research suggests it may also offer support for those managing high blood pressure.
A study by researchers at the SDM College of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences in India explored how a Neutral Immersion Bath (NIB) with epsom salt affects individuals with hypertension. Their findings revealed that soaking in a warm, magnesium-rich bath can positively influence blood pressure, heart rhythm, and relaxation.
What The Study Found

The study involved 100 participants aged 30 to 50, all diagnosed with hypertension. They were divided into two groups: one enjoyed a 20-minute neutral-temperature bath with 200 grams of epsom salt, while the other simply rested lying down.
After 20 minutes, the epsom salt bath group showed:
- Lower systolic blood pressure (SBP) – the top number in a blood pressure reading, linked to heart health.
- Improved heart rate variability (HRV) – an indicator of better nervous system balance and stress resilience.
- Shift toward parasympathetic dominance – meaning their bodies transitioned from “fight or flight” to “rest and restore” mode.
Meanwhile, the resting group showed little to no change in their readings. While the results are promising, researchers emphasized that more studies are needed to confirm long-term effects.
Why Epsom Salt Makes A Difference
The secret lies in magnesium. According to the study’s findings, “Epsom salt added to the water causes the magnesium ions to separate from the salt molecules as magnesium ions and sulfate ions, both of which are easily absorbed by the skin.”
Magnesium plays a vital role in over 300 body processes, including regulating blood pressure, supporting muscle function, and calming the nervous system. It helps relax blood vessels, promotes better circulation, and may encourage serotonin release—the “feel-good” hormone that eases stress and enhances well-being.
Together, these effects can help reduce tension, lower blood pressure, and create a deep sense of calm.
A Gentle Ritual With A Soothing Effect
This study shows how something simple—like a warm epsom salt bath—can offer both physical and emotional benefits. Beyond being a relaxing treat, it’s a small, mindful ritual that can support heart health and peace of mind.
Picture yourself sinking into a relaxing bath at the end of a long day, letting the water wash away stress while your body finds balance again. Sometimes, wellness begins with the quietest moments.
