Can Epsom Salt Flotation Rewire Chronic Lower Back Pain?

epsom salt flotation for chronic lower back pain

If you are curious about how an epsom salt float environment might fit into wellness and recovery conversations, a clinical study offers an especially interesting angle.

Rather than testing epsom salt on its own, researchers explored Float-REST—a floating experience that combines warm water, a highly concentrated epsom salt solution, darkness, quiet, and reduced sensory input—to see how it might affect stress and chronic lower back pain.

Why Researchers Explored Float-REST

The clinical study, conducted by the West Virginia University Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute, focused on adults living with chronic lower back pain. Researchers were interested in the connection between long-term stress and how the brain processes pain.

Instead of viewing chronic pain as only a physical issue, the team looked at whether deep relaxation and reduced stimulation could potentially support recovery and improve quality of life.

Participants in the Float-REST group floated in warm, skin-temperature water filled with epsom salt inside a low-light, low-noise environment designed to minimize distractions. A controlled comparison group was also included.

Rather than floating, those participants rested in a Metro Nappod recliner in a quiet, dim room so researchers could compare floating with a more traditional rest experience.

How The Study Worked

This was a randomized, interventional study involving 24 participants between 18 and 65 years old, all of whom had experienced chronic lower back pain for at least 12 weeks. The study began in February 2022 and was completed in January 2023.

Participants in both groups completed six 60-minute sessions over three weeks. Researchers also set clear eligibility requirements, including stable prescription medication use and no previous Float-REST experience.

Importantly, this was not simply a “Did participants enjoy it?” type of study. Researchers measured both personal experiences and physical changes in the body and brain.

What Researchers Measured

One of the main areas researchers studied was brain activity using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Participants completed scans before and near the end of the study so researchers could look for changes in how the brain responded to pain.

The study also tracked heart rate, stress levels, anxiety, sleep quality, mindfulness, emotional regulation, and pain response through questionnaires, wearable devices, and physical testing. Blood samples were also collected to monitor stress- and inflammation-related biomarkers.

That broader approach matters because it shows researchers were treating chronic lower back pain as more than just a muscle issue. They were exploring whether a calming recovery environment could influence stress biology, sleep, and pain perception together.

What This Means For Epsom Salt Bath Fans

For anyone who already enjoys epsom salt bath benefits, this study highlights the growing scientific interest in restorative routines and nervous system recovery.

At the same time, it is important to keep the findings in perspective: the trial examined the full Float-REST experience—not epsom salt alone. More study is still needed before researchers can draw stronger conclusions about its effects.

While a regular bath does not recreate a clinical float session, the idea behind the research may still feel familiar. Warm water, quiet time, and intentional rest can help create space to slow down and unwind after a stressful day.
