Imagine stepping into a one-hour sanctuary where you float effortlessly in a warm, skin-temperature epsom salt soak, surrounded by near-darkness and peaceful silence.
That’s Floatation-REST (Reduced Environmental Stimulation Therapy)—a unique experience explored in an open-label study on people struggling with anxiety and depression. Participants included individuals with PTSD, generalized anxiety, panic disorder, agoraphobia, social anxiety, and even unipolar depression.
For one hour, they floated in a specially designed open pool and let go of the noise of the outside world.
Significantly Calmer After An Hour

The results were remarkable. Every one of the 50 participants reported a massive drop in state anxiety—with Cohen’s d exceeding 2, an exceptionally large effect size.
Stress, muscle tension, pain, depression, and negative feelings all declined, while serenity, relaxation, happiness, and energy increased across the board.
The strongest improvements? Feeling refreshed, peaceful, and less anxious.
Safe, Welcoming, And Surprisingly Simple
The open pool setup was designed for comfort. It eliminated the enclosed feel of traditional tanks and included soundproofing, steady temperature control, and a soft blue LED light that could be turned off with a simple wave.
Most participants completed the full hour with no major side effects—only mild itchiness or dry mouth for a few.
The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many describing sensations like “total serenity,” “body relaxation,” or “a reset button hit.” One participant who started the session feeling panicked finished feeling calm and comforted.
Tailored Relief For The Highly Anxious
Those with the most severe anxiety experienced the biggest improvements. Even participants who were already taking medications such as SSRIs or SNRIs or who had tried therapy before said the float session gave them more relaxation than any other technique.
About 75% of participants agreed, and that number rose to 82% among the most anxious group.
Floating Forward: What’s Next For Floatation-REST?
This pilot study offers hope, though more research is needed. It didn’t include a control group or long-term follow-up, so it’s unclear how long the effects last.
Still, the findings suggest that a single float session can deliver real, immediate relief for people dealing with anxiety and depression symptoms.
With minimal side effects, no medication involved, and a strong sense of relaxation, Floatation-REST shows promise as a future therapeutic tool for stress relief and mental well-being.
Why This Matters
In a world filled with constant noise and distraction, Floatation-REST reminds us how powerful stillness can be. Even just 60 minutes away from the world’s buzz can calm both body and mind in measurable ways.
