Can Epsom Salt Help With Knee Pain? A Look At New Research

Knee pain—whether from osteoarthritis, wear and tear, or everyday strain—is one of the most common complaints as we get older, as it makes even simple movements difficult.

While pain medication and medical treatments are often suggested, a new study out of India sheds light on something much simpler—and much more soothing: hot water with epsom salt.

What The Study Looked At

Researchers in Madurai, a district in southern India, set out to explore whether applying hot water with epsom salt could reduce knee pain in older adults. 60 elderly participants were selected from rural villages, all of whom reported severe or extreme knee pain before the intervention.

The study used a one-group pre-test/post-test design, which means there was no separate control group. Instead, researchers measured participants’ pain levels before the intervention, guided them to use warm water with epsom salt on their knees, and then measured pain levels again afterward.

While this type of design doesn’t allow for comparisons with an untreated group, it does provide useful insight into how participants’ pain changed after the treatment.

The Results Were Striking

Before treatment, two-thirds of participants reported severe knee pain, while the rest experienced extreme pain. After regular use of hot water with epsom salt, things changed dramatically:

  • Over 78% of participants reported only mild pain
  • About 22% reported moderate pain
  • No one remained in the “severe” or “extreme” pain category

The average pain score dropped from 63.41 before treatment to 19.76 after—a huge shift supported by statistical testing.

Interestingly, the researchers also noted that factors such as age, gender, income, or diet didn’t make much difference. The relief was broadly effective across all groups.

Why This Matters For Everyday Wellness

The big takeaway? Sometimes the simplest remedies are the most powerful.

For older adults with knee discomfort, epsom salt baths or compresses may offer meaningful relief without the side effects of constant medication.

Of course, it’s important to note that this was a single-group study without a control group, meaning more research is needed to confirm just how much of the improvement comes from the treatment itself versus other possible factors. Still, the consistent results suggest real potential benefits.

Epsom salt, known scientifically as magnesium sulfate, has long been used for soothing sore muscles and easing stiffness. Warm water amplifies these effects by boosting circulation and relaxing tight tissues.

Together, they create a natural therapy that’s both practical and deeply comforting.
