The Calming Power Of Epsom Salt Baths For High Blood Pressure

The Calming Power Of Epsom Salt Baths For High Blood Pressure

Hypertension—commonly known as high blood pressure—is one of the most widespread health challenges worldwide, silently increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and kidney damage.

An epsom salt bath has often been used as a home remedy for relaxation, and recent research suggests it may also have supportive effects for those living with high blood pressure.

Researchers from the SDM College of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences in India explored how a Neutral Immersion Bath (NIB) with epsom salt affects people living with hypertension. Their findings confirm that slipping into a warm bath enhanced with magnesium-rich epsom salt can have measurable benefits on blood pressure, heart rhythm, and overall relaxation.

What The Study Found

The study involved 100 individuals between the ages of 30 and 50, all diagnosed with hypertension. Participants were randomly divided into two groups: one group enjoyed a 20-minute neutral-temperature bath infused with 200 grams of epsom salt, while the other group simply rested in a supine position.

After just 20 minutes, those who soaked in the epsom salt bath experienced:

  • Lower systolic blood pressure (SBP) – the top number in a blood pressure reading, linked to heart health.
  • Improved heart rate variability (HRV) – a key marker of a balanced nervous system, indicating reduced stress and better resilience.
  • Shift toward parasympathetic dominance – in simple terms, their bodies moved out of “fight or flight” mode and into “rest and restore” mode.

By contrast, the group that only rested saw little to no change in their blood pressure or heart rhythm. While these results point to potential benefits, the researchers also noted that further studies are needed to confirm longer-term effects.

Why Epsom Salt Makes A Difference

So, what’s the secret ingredient? It’s all about magnesium. Epsom salt (chemically known as magnesium sulfate) dissolves in warm water, releasing magnesium ions that can be absorbed through the skin.

Magnesium is a powerhouse mineral involved in over 300 biochemical processes in the body, including regulating blood pressure, supporting muscle function, and calming the nervous system.

The researchers noted that magnesium helps relax blood vessels, improves circulation, and reduces stress by encouraging serotonin release—the feel-good hormone. These effects work together to ease tension, lower blood pressure, and create a deep sense of calm.
