Essential Oils To Treat Your Dandruff Naturally
Tea tree oil – Tea tree oil is great at killing the fungus responsible for dandruff. In fact, one research team found that a shampoo containing 5 percent of this oil was able to reduce oiliness, itchiness, and scalp lesions by 42 percent. In general, tea tree is anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and promotes wound healing, which explains its success as a dandruff treatment.
Cinnamon leaf and thyme oils – In an article by the Journal of Essential Oil Research, this oil combination has proven to greatly reduce the occurrence of the dandruff fungus.
Lemongrass, eucalyptus, and peppermint oils – While scientists tested various essential oils, a yeast-like fungus similar to the ones that cause dandruff. Eucalyptus is not the only anti-fungal, it is also a good anti-inflammatory to combat the inflammatory chemicals that your immune system produces in response to the fungus and dryness.
Lavender oil – A wonderful and gentle moisturizer with anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory effects that also smells great!
Patchouli oil – This essential oil is a gentle moisturizer, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fungal oil much like lavender.
Cordia verbenacea oil – While this is not as easily available as some of the other oils, it is one of the best for treating dandruff. It also controls your immune system’s allergic response by serving as an antihistamine and it fights inflammation. That aside, it counters yeast-like fungi.
Bay laurel or sweet bay oil – This oil is another uncommon one, but it has proven to have anti-inflammatory effect that aids with uncomfortable itching.
Chamomile oil – Any chamomile oil has an anti-inflammatory effect that when applied to the skin or scalp, it has a good antihistamine against allergies.
Citrus oils – Lemon, lime, orange, and bergamot essential oils smell great and helps to regulate your own skin’s natural oil production.
How Do You Use These Essential Oils For Dandruff?
One way is to add 10 to 12 drops of essential oil for every 1 ounce of your shampoo and make sure to mix it in. Rub the shampoo into your scalp and allow it to sit on your scalp for around 5 minutes. You can also use these essential oils as a hair rinse. Choosing a bucket of appropriate size, pour in water with around 8 to 10 drops of essential oils mixed in. Make a friend or partner pour it over your head in order for your hair to fully absorb the benefits.
