How many times have you told yourself that you’re going to start a new habit but ended up not doing it? Are you still itching for that relaxing bath or that delicious dinner you’ve promised yourself after achieving a certain goal? Are you not following through with anything at all?

If so, you might be feeling unmotivated.

There are times when motivation is something that is truly hard to grasp. That’s why you might want to define what motivation is for you first.

What Is Motivation?

Simply put, motivation is a want. It is a drive to change something inside us—whether it’s a habit, a behavior, a feeling, an environment, or a relationship.

Motivation is what sets you in action. It is what pushes you to achieve that seemingly impossible goal you’ve set for yourself.

According to author Daniel Goleman, there are four elements that make up motivation:

  • Optimism Or Resilience – This is the ability to keep going despite facing setbacks.
  • Commitment – This is your dedication to personal or organizational goals.
  • Personal Drive To Achieve – This is your inclination to meet or improve certain standards.
  • Initiative – This is your willingness to act upon opportunities presented to you.

Why Don't You Feel Motivated?

Now that you know what motivation means, get to the root of it so you can keep doing what you have to do every day. Here are some reasons you might be feeling unmotivated:

You’ve Set An Unrealistic Goal For Yourself

You’ll only end up overwhelming yourself if you continue taking on big responsibilities. Stop trying to do everything all at once!

Instead, break down bigger projects into smaller ones so you can see results in a shorter span of time. This is called compartmentalization, and it will give you the motivation you need to see the project through to the end.

You Don’t Know How To Use Your Time Wisely

Time management goes hand in hand with motivation. Uninterested people tend to put off completing their tasks, which results in their inefficiency. Remind yourself that you alone have control over your time.

You Don’t Believe That You Are Talented And Capable

Doubt is the enemy of creativity. When you succumb to the thinking that you’re not capable of doing the thing you’ve always wanted to do, it stops you from being inspired.

As much as possible, drive the negative thoughts away. Believe in yourself as well as the talents and skills you possess. You are far more capable than you think.

How To Motivate Yourself

Once you have detected the source of your demotivation, it’s time to figure out how to get out of that funk. Here’s what you can do when you are lacking motivation:

Focus On One Specific Goal

Having too many might just put you back into your slump, so focus on one at a time. Think about how you will incorporate that goal into your life, and then list down the things you’ll need to do to make it happen.

Give yourself a time frame. A week is ideal, but if you need to give yourself more time, don’t hesitate to do so. Break your goal into small actionable steps, and set regular reminders on your phone, a notebook, or any medium you prefer.

Review Your Goals Regularly

Seeing progress is a great motivator. Whenever you’ve achieved something, pat yourself on the back or treat yourself to something you’ve always wanted. You can enjoy a slice of pizza or unwind with a nice, warm bath soak.

Keep It Up

Once you’ve found your momentum, just keep going. Remember that it takes up to 3 months to develop a new habit. Don’t give up once it gets hard. Try to set up a routine to help the habit feel more automatic as time passes.

Get Support

Surround yourself with positive people such as friends and members of your family. Ask them to hold you accountable for your goals and resolutions.

However, bear in mind that the people you know will tend to give pieces of advice that are a reflection of their own lives. If you want to avoid this, you might want to get a mentor, someone who is experienced in the habit you want to create or change. Look for support groups that have the same interest as you. This might help you find a suitable mentor.

When All Else Fails, Don’t Fight The Feeling Of Being Unmotivated

There are certain days when the best thing to do is to sit with the feeling of being indifferent to your goals. Acknowledge that you just don’t have the energy to chase after them today.

You do not have to always be so hard on yourself. Besides, pushing yourself when you can’t will only result in mediocre work.
